Media attention for the epic comeback battle is not exclusive to Korean outlets, however. In the US, major music players like Billboard and Fuse TV are also asking which group will be able to garner the most support from the fans.
Releasing new albums within days of each other, this will undoubtedly be a neck and neck battle to the top, and Fuse wants to hear from you!
Fuse TV's site is currently hosting a fan poll, asking members of the two passionate fan bases to vote for which girl group's release they are most excited for.
So far the response from eager-to-vote fans has been overwhelming, so much so that the site experienced some technical difficulties.
Likening the chart race to Kayne West and 50 Cent's war over fans back in 2007, Fuse sees the battle between 2NE1 and Girls' Generation as one without a clear frontrunner.
Both groups have far-reaching international popularity and have repeatedly hit the top of charts both in South Korea and abroad.
Girls' Generation is up first. The nine-member girl group dropped their long awaited six-track EP Mr. Mr. February 24.
The album's title track was produced by American production team the Underdogs who have worked with many of America's top pop stars including Justin Timberlake and Britney Spears.
The K-Pop icons have repeatedly proven themselves to be a force in the music industry including holding the record for the highest-charting K-Pop album on the Billboard 200 (their Twinkle EP reached number 126) and taking home the YouTube award for Video of the Year back in November.
On the other side of the ring is YG Entertainment's dominate girl group 2NE1who are expected to drop their second studio album, Crush, on February 26.
Originally slated to drop the same day as Girls' Generation's Mr. Mr., the release date for Crush was pushed back a couple days to align with the birthday of the group's leader, CL, who composed three of the new songs herself.
The ten-track album will feature double lead singles, "Come Back Home" and "Gotta Be You," which feature different sides of the group's unique sound. The former hits on 2NE1's hip-hop and reggae-influenced style while the latter is expected to be an up-tempo dance track.
The video for "Come Back Home" is set to be released on the 28th and boasts the group's highest budget to date, drumming up a lot of speculation and excitement.
Unlike their competitors, 2NE1 has yet to crack the Billboard 200, but their recent appearance on the reality show The Bachelor is expected to help boost sales in the US.
Who do you think will come out on top of the album battle between Girls' Generation and 2NE1? Head over to the Fuse TV website HERE and cast your vote!
