Yang Hyun Suk ‘Seo Taiji & GD Are Polar Opposite Geniuses’

YG Entertainment's CEO and head producer Yang Hyun Suk was an active member of Seo Taiji and the Boys in the 1990s. He worked with Seo Taiji, a genius songwriter, composer, and producer. Thereafter Yang Hyun Suk became a producer himself, and helped G-Dragon become who he is today - the leader of the leading idol group Big Bang, music producer, songwriter, and song composer.

Then what similarities and differences does Yang Hyun Suk see between Seo Taiji and G-Dragon? He said, "Seo Taiji and G-Dragon are both musical geniuses, but they're polar opposites."

G-Dragon is a leader not only in music, but in fashion, dance, and various other fields.

Big Bang recently held their solo concert '2014 Big Bang Plus in Alpha in Seoul' at the Olympic Gymnasium Stadium in Seoul. Afterward Yang Hyun Suk met with reporters and commented, "Seo Taiji thought only about his music. He had no interest in fashion, and had little interest in dance. His sole focus was music. When making an album, he would shut himself in for months at a home and immerse himself only in music."

Yang Hyun Suk noted the vast differences between Seo Taiji and G-Dragon. He said, "Oftentimes I'll look at G-Dragon and be amazed and surprised. He's good not only with music, but has an excellent fashion sense, and is a world renowned fashionista. He's also interested in many other fields, including dance. His music making style is very different from that of Seo Taiji. He'll be doing something else, or playing, and all of a sudden he'll get a sudden stroke of genius. Then he'll create music very quickly."

G-Dragon went through harsh training by Yang Hyun Suk. Yang Hyun Suk discovered G-Dragon at a young age and brought him to YG Entertainment. Then he instructed G-Dragon to write one song a month and present it to him. To this very day no one has received this kind of special management that G-Dragon went through.

Yang Hyun Suk said, "For a long time I wasn't satisfied with the songs G-Dragon brought to me. It was only after he made Big Bang's 'Lies' that I started to acknowledge his composing abilities." He continued, "Even from a very young age G-Dragon was very special, and made his name known to hip hop fans. I don't think for a second that I created him. G-Dragon's abilities are innate. I just supported him and helped him grow well."

Can there be another 'Big Bang'?

Yang Hyun Suk revealed that in 1996 Seo Taiji and the Boys declared their retirement. As they were leaving in a helicopter, he said to Seo Taiji, "Do you think there will be another group like Seo Taiji and the Boys in the future?" After Big Bang's concert he was asked a question along the same lines. "Can there be another group like Big Bang in the future?"

He answered, "Seo Taiji and the Boys only worked for 4 years. When I created Big Bang, I wanted to go far beyond the limits of 4-5 years, which was common among normal boy groups. Big Bang has already gone past that time period, and is already in their 9th year. It would be great if they could be a group that's active for more than 20 years."

At Big Bang's concert G-Dragon revealed to their fans that the group will be releasing a 3rd album in July or August this year. This would be their first album in 2 years, their last album having been released in 2012. In the meantime fans can meet with Taeyang in his solo album activities and with TOP in his movie appearances.

Seo Taiji also announced that he will be releasing a 9th album this year. Following their 8th album release in July of 2009, he took a 4 year break from music activities.
