JYP’s highly anticipated new boy group finally made its debut.
The seven members of Got7 performed Girls Girls Girls on Mnet’s M Countdown on January 15, and finally unveiled itself with head-turning performance.
With JYP being one of the three major agencies in the industry, along with SM and YG Entertainment, all eyes have been on its new idol group, which is inevitably being compared with SM’s EXO and YG’s Winner.
During a recent interview with Newsen, which took place before its debut, Got7 was asked about constantly being mentioned alongside EXO and Winner.
“We didn’t expect this competition set up with EXO and Winner. We don’t really think we are rivals. We have a lot to learn from EXO as well as from Winner. Each group has its unique traits, so we believe that there are elements we can learn from them. We want to show support and respect other groups, instead of forming rivalries with them,” answered Got7.
The group continued by saying, “When we met Winner for Mnet’s WIN: Who is Next, we never thought, ‘we must beat them!’ It’s about respecting each other. Our specialty is ‘martial arts tricking,’ so we might have something that we are better at. But EXO and Winner all have different things they can show. It’s hard to say who is better than the other.”
Like they mentioned, ‘martial arts tricking’ is pleasing to the eye as it combines martial arts movements with b-boying, freely crossing boundaries of different genres of dance movements.
When asked about their musical role models, BamBam chose Big Bang’s G-Dragon, Jackson chose Dr. Dre, Mark chose Kanye West, Yugeom chose Chris Brown, Youngjae chose ‘The Voice’ winner Javier, JB chose D’Angelo, Mark chose Kanye West, while Jr chose Park Jin Young, saying, “He always works hard while pursuing his dream in music.”
Finally the group was asked to make an official promise for the album ranking.
After thinking for a while, they answered, “If we rank in top seven in a music chart, we will hold a free hug event for fans on the last day of performing Girls Girls Girls on a music program.”
